Fire at Medline – Shortages to Come?

This article is reprinted from the Speak Out Now healthcare newsletter at Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA.

A fire recently broke out at a medical equipment facility in Tracy, CA. The affected company, Medline, is the largest supplier of medical-surgical products, servicing about 1,800 hospitals and 70,000 non-acute care sites.

It’s unclear yet what impact the destruction of this one million square foot warehouse will have on the healthcare system. Many of us are worried about potential supply shortages, or higher prices.

It hasn’t been the first time that the disruption to one building or company led to a major disruption to the entire supply chain. Concentrating critical medical supplies in fewer companies creates a fragile situation where a single disaster can ripple across the entire healthcare system.

A warehouse that size should have had safety measures in place to prevent a fire that catastrophic. Now Tracy residents are paying the price of smoke and air pollution, while hospitals and patients will likely bear the cost of supply disruptions in the months ahead.
