Silverio Villegas Gonzales was a resident of a Chicago suburb, where he lived with his two sons. One day when dropping his kids at school, he was stopped by ICE agents under the pretense of a traffic infraction. He was then shot by one of the agents when he allegedly tried to escape. Silverio was only 38 years old, and an immigrant from Mexico.
The FBI has now taken over the case, but no more information about the ICE agent responsible, or the circumstances of his death, have been released. This case shows the extent of impunity for the abuse of power that is being granted to ICE.
It is likely that little will be done to remedy this injustice, unless ordinary people step in to demand justice, as community members from Chicago are starting to recognize. We cannot allow this injustice to continue.
