Update on the U.S./Israeli War on the Middle East

The Israeli army continues its brutal siege on Gaza, blocking aid to the 200,000 Palestinians it has trapped in the north of the territory and massacring people with its bombardments and invasions. We see images of the rubble publicized by the mainstream press, but not the horrifying torture and execution of Palestinian people. The latest attack has resulted in the killing and wounding of hundreds of people, with those wounded left to suffer without suitable care due to Israel’s devastation of hospitals. These genocidal assaults are part of a broader plan for the settler-colonial state of Israel. The attendance and speeches of Israeli government ministers at the recent “Preparing to Settle in Gaza” conference demonstrate the interests of state representatives in annexing land in Gaza, as they support the escalated settlement of land in the West Bank.

The Biden-Harris administration has supported Israel’s genocide in Gaza with $17.9 billion in military aid over the last year and is aligned with Israel in a wider war to exert dominance over the Middle East. The U.S. has not backed down from supporting Israel as it continues its assault on densely populated cities in Lebanon, targeting hospitals, banks, and civilian infrastructure. In Lebanon, the U.S. and Israel once more show their willingness to maim and kill thousands of people to destabilize the armed political parties of Hamas and Hezbollah, which were formed to resist Israel’s colonial occupations of land in Palestine and Lebanon.

U.S. capitalists and their politicians intend to do whatever it takes to maintain control over the Middle East. Democratic and Republican Party officials have voiced their support for a defense deal with Saudi Arabia in exchange for the state’s normalization of relations with Israel. The Biden-Harris administration bombed Houthi weapon storage sites in Yemen without Congressional permission. Leaked U.S. intelligence documents show the Biden-Harris administration continues to collude with Israel in preparation for a full-blown war with Iran, with Israel threatening to strike Iranian nuclear sites . Israel has repeatedly used U.S. weapons to bomb Syria with impunity, including its strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1, 2024, which was a major instigation of the developing war.

The actions of the U.S. in the Middle East speak louder than the words of the nation’s presidential candidates this election. The U.S. operates as a global capitalist power, intent on controlling the world’s resources at the expense of millions of people. These politicians do not serve us! As people in the U.S. and around the world suffer from cycles of economic collapse, war, and climate catastrophe, it is clear we need an international solution. The global majority of the working class must organize itself if we are to stand a chance. The lives of people in the Middle East, and all our lives, depend on our organized opposition to the wars waged by the ruling class against us.
