Capitalism is Destroying the Planet; Only Workers Can Save It

Disasters follow one another and are becoming more frequent

Temperatures are soaring, mega-fires are devouring entire regions, cyclones are ravaging everything in their path and droughts are destroying crops. These disasters are anything but natural: behind them lies a profit-hungry capitalism that causes famine, forced migration and the deaths of millions of the most vulnerable people. Meanwhile, the decision-makers and heads of state, their capitalists and their experts play to the gallery. Every year, they hold their COP (Conference of the Parties), now in its thirtieth edition in Belém [in Brazil] without anything fundamental changing. And for good reason: this repulsive and ridiculous spectacle is organised by firefighter arsonists who are only capable of accusing the popular classes of consuming badly, when they are the ones who produce anything and everything in any way, poisoning us and destroying the planet. As for the richest, they continue to travel the world in private jets, emitting more CO2 in a few dozen minutes than a worker does in his whole life…

Macron and Lula: behind the speeches, lie the lobbies of polluters

French President Macron poses as a champion of the climate, but has brought with him a representative of TotalEnergies, one of the biggest polluters on the planet. Lula, the president of Brazil, which is hosting COP 30, has promised to save the Amazon rainforest, but does nothing serious to combat illegal logging and the industrialists who are damaging it, and has planned oil exploration in Rio Bay…

State leaders claim they want to save the planet, but they are under the thumb of the big capitalist groups and approve projects for new drilling, new mines and new export routes! They talk about “ecological transition” while the hunt for oil and gas continues, and is now also including the rare earths needed for electric batteries… This hunt for minerals is causing new deadly rivalries, as in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the different imperialist powers are fighting each other through the local populations.

Le Pen, Trump: anti-environmental demagoguery to serve the same polluting lobbies!

From President Trump to Marine Le Pen (leader of the extreme right National Rally (RN) party in France), the far right is rising up against “punitive ecology” that would generate taxes affecting the poor above all. But the first to have increased taxes is Trump, for reasons that have everything to do with preserving capitalist profits. It is not those who denounce the climate crisis who are responsible for the layoffs, but the leaders of Stellantis, Arcelor-Mittal and others (companies that announced many layoffs)! The governments of rich countries, such as France, are already denouncing migrants and applying the same policies as the far right in power. Yet it is the misery and famine caused by climate disasters that are forcing millions of people to seek survival in exile, not to mention the wars and genocides resulting from the capitalists’ race for oil and minerals.

The climate and biodiversity are in our hands, not in those of the rich!

Neither Macron nor Lula, nor their reactionary opponents, will save anything. As long as a few decide for everyone, as long as the race for accumulation takes precedence over human needs, the planet will continue to sink. We must take away from the owners of capital this absurd right to decide what will be produced and under which conditions. We must put an end to production geared towards the profits of a few and organize it according to our needs. If workers took charge of organizing society, humanity would be better off. And so would the planet!
