Greece — October 21 Should Mark the Beginning: Let’s Break the Election Wait Through Struggle!

Thousands of students, teachers, and workers demonstrated en masse on October 21 in Athens and other cities across Greece. Faced with underfunding of schools, student expulsions, and the creation of private universities, the movement for quality education is back, mobilizing youth and workers in a comprehensive struggle against the government and the system of austerity, repression, and wars.

The government’s attempts to sow panic in order to undermine the mobilization have been in vain! We denounce the Ministry of Police and the New Democracy [right-wing] government, which, on October 22, closed the main subway stations and deployed massive numbers of law enforcement officers in central Athens. The police carried out provocative checks, going so far as to attack marchers at the end of the march with tear gas and stun grenades, particularly at the subway entrance.
