Last week, the Nebraska legislature passed a bill, LB 574, that simultaneously prohibited abortions before 12 weeks of pregnancy and restricted gender-affirming care for trans youth. The bill was passed into law by a single vote. While the bill was originally only to limit reproductive rights, on May 17 legislators added an amendment to also attack medical care for trans youth.
This new law combines in one what has been the thrust of far-right legislative activity in the past year: attacking trans people and curtailing reproductive rights. These issues have become the focus of hundreds of pieces of legislation in state legislatures across the country. It’s the same far right legislators and their billionaire backers who are behind these attacks on our rights. We must unite our struggles to fight these assaults from the far-right!
