Kaiser San Rafael Nurses Protest Potential Layoffs

On August 21st, nurses at the Kaiser San Rafael facility held a one-day protest in response to the looming threat of 41 nursing positions being eliminated this October. These layoffs, if carried out, would not only affect the workers who lose their jobs, but also those who remain—forcing them to shoulder an even greater burden amidst already unsafe staffing levels.

The protest was a powerful statement against what many nurses see as a clear disconnect between the Kaiser administration and the realities faced by front-line healthcare workers. At San Rafael, nurses are already struggling under short-staffed conditions. Patients are forced to endure longer wait times and often do not receive the quality of care they deserve—not because nurses don’t care, but because the staffing is stretched too thin. Meanwhile, the Kaiser administration reportedly tripled its profits over the past year, a fact highlighted on signs carried by members of the California Nurses Association during the demonstration.

Kaiser San Rafael has become yet another example of how, under capitalism, the profit-driven nature of our healthcare system prioritizes profit over the well-being of both workers and patients. As long as healthcare remains tied to corporate interests, it’s the front-line staff and the people they care for who bear the consequences. This situation makes it clear: if real change is to come, it will have to be led by organized hospital workers and patients fighting together for their rights.
