Climate Crisis: Actions Speak Louder than Words

President Biden has made a big show on both the campaign trail and as president of how green he is. He has called climate change an existential crisis, pledged to rejoin the (completely inadequate) Paris Climate Accord, and even named John Kerry as a special envoy for the climate. But actions speak louder than words, and Biden’s actions couldn’t be clearer. Since his inauguration on January 20th, over 30 new permits for oil and gas drilling have been approved by the Biden administration.

This is suicidal insanity. 2020 was tied with 2016 for the hottest year on record. Natural disasters and wildfires have been increasing in severity worldwide. We need to be radically reducing our emissions right now – not giving out more permits to increase the supply of fossil fuels.

But Biden, for all his bluster about the importance of the climate crisis, is at best offering a very gradual phase out of fossil fuels and CO2 emissions – a policy that goes against everything that scientists say we need to do to reduce the impact of the climate crisis and keep global temperatures at a lower level.

The only way that we can actually follow the science and take action to really reduce CO2 emissions is if we control the economy ourselves – and not leave it in the hands of capitalists who profit off of environmental destruction, and their political cronies who pretend to resist them. The survival of humanity is at stake in the fight against the climate crisis – and we can’t rely on Biden or any other politician to fight for us.
